A long time ago, in a small village called Nazareth, lived a young woman named Mary. Mary was kind, faithful, and loved God with all her heart. She was engaged to be married to a carpenter named Joseph. They both came from humble families and lived simple lives.
One day, something extraordinary happened. Mary was alone when an angel named Gabriel appeared before her. She was startled and frightened, but the angel spoke gently: “Do not be afraid, Mary. God has chosen you for something wonderful. You will have a baby, and He will be the Son of God.
You shall call Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Savior of the world.” Mary was amazed. She asked, “How can this happen? I am not yet married.” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of God will make it so. Nothing is impossible for God.”
Though she didn’t fully understand, Mary trusted God. She replied, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it happen as you have said.” When Joseph learned that Mary was going to have a baby, he was confused and worried. He knew the baby wasn’t his, but he didn’t want Mary to be hurt or shamed.
He decided to quietly end their engagement. That night, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The child she carries is from the Holy Spirit. He will save people from their sins. You will name Him Jesus.”
When Joseph woke up, he believed the angel and obeyed God. He took Mary as his wife and promised to care for her and the child. Some time later, the ruler of the land, Caesar Augustus, ordered everyone to go back to their hometown to be counted in a census.
Since Joseph’s family was from Bethlehem, he and Mary had to travel there. Mary was very pregnant, and the journey was long and difficult. When they finally reached Bethlehem, the town was crowded with people. Joseph searched for a place for them to stay, but every inn was full.
They were turned away again and again. Finally, one kind innkeeper offered them shelter in his stable. It wasn’t a house, but it was warm and safe. The stable was where animals were kept, and there was hay on the ground. That night, in the quiet of the stable, Mary gave birth to her baby.
She wrapped Him in cloths to keep Him warm and laid Him in a manger, a feeding trough for animals. This was how the Savior of the world came into the world—humbly and quietly. Nearby, shepherds were watching their sheep in the fields. Suddenly, an angel appeared, and the sky was filled with bright light.
The shepherds were terrified, but the angel said, “Do not be afraid! I bring you good news of great joy. Today in Bethlehem, a Savior has been born. He is Christ the Lord. You will find Him wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Then the sky filled with a multitude of angels, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to those with whom He is pleased.” The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to see what the angel had told them. They found Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus in the stable, just as the angel had said.
Filled with joy, they told everyone they met about what they had seen. Far away in the East, wise men saw a bright star in the sky. They knew it was a sign of something important. These men were scholars who studied the stars and ancient writings. They believed the star meant a great king had been born.
The wise men followed the star for many weeks, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to honor the new king. The star led them to Bethlehem, where they found Jesus. They bowed down and worshiped Him, offering their gifts. When the wise men had first arrived in Jerusalem, they asked King Herod, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?
We have seen His star and have come to worship Him.” Herod was disturbed. He was a jealous king and didn’t want anyone else to take his throne. He told the wise men, “When you find the child, let me know so I can worship Him too.” But Herod was lying. He planned to harm the baby.
After visiting Jesus, the wise men were warned in a dream not to return to Herod. They went home by a different route. An angel appeared to Joseph in another dream and warned him of Herod’s plan. The angel said, “Take the child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you it is safe.”
Joseph obeyed immediately. He and Mary took baby Jesus and traveled to Egypt during the night. They stayed there until Herod died, and then they returned to Nazareth, where Jesus grew up. The birth of Jesus was the beginning of a new chapter in the world’s story. He was born in humble surroundings, yet He brought hope, love, and salvation to all people.
The shepherds, wise men, Mary, Joseph, and even the angels rejoiced because they knew that this tiny baby was the Savior of the world. And so, the story of Baby Jesus reminds us of God’s great love and the promise of peace and joy for everyone.
